Overview
The Seto Inland Sea Carbon-Neutral Research Center was established by Hiroshima University in FY2023 to promote interdisciplinary GX (Green Transformation) research that integrates green carbon, blue carbon, and carbon recycling — including studies on carbon reduction functions through bioprocesses such as photosynthesis and carbon fixation, development of CO₂ refinery technologies, and CN (carbon neutrality) monitoring.
The Center comprises three divisions: the Sustainability Division, Blue Innovation Division and Green Innovation Division , and integrates three research facilities: Miyajima Natural Botanical Garden, Mukaishima Marine Biological Laboratory and Takehara Fisheries Research Station. In addition, the Center is involved with local governments and institutions at Osakikamijima Town, and Hiroshima University’s A-ESG Science and Technology Research Center to conduct human resource development courses and workshops aimed at the practical application of carbon recycling with the intention of the Town becoming a “Zero Carbon City” by 2050.
This Center is the first research hub at a national university in Japan that comprehensively addresses the dynamics of greenhouse gases (carbon cycle) not only across land and ocean but also across the atmosphere. It aims to achieve a more precise understanding of carbon flows and promote effective carbon reduction. At the same time, it conducts research on social impacts and international strategies for implementing innovations in society, while advancing integrated research based on a shared recognition of the need for high-efficiency innovation.
